Snow White and the Seven Photos

I pretty much love all fairytales, not a big surprise there. I like the spooky sad old original versions, like Brothers Grimm, AND the sweet, nice, sugar-coated ones, too. Actually, if I'm going to be super honest, I kinda like the nicey ones most. Yep, even the Disney cartoons. Confession: I love the old Disney cartoons!

I went to the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco recently, and it sparked a whole re-watching of the classics. We started off with Snow White, and, aside from the unbelievably high-pitched sound she makes when she sings, it is a beautiful film. Confession: I love her high-pitched mouse voice, too. It kinda sounds like the mice that sing between scenes in Babe, which I also....love.

I guess I love Snow White so much that I've collected Snow White stuff. Shocking, right?! I know, I know. So here's five pictures of Snow White things I own, and two pictures of Snow White things I want to own.

Mermaids in the Bathroom

Cute Vintage Mermaids: The Blonde is made by Norcrest and the Redhead is made by Lefton.

We moved into our house a few years ago, and ever since I've been obsessed with making our upstairs bathroom cute and vintage looking. It came with a terrible fiberglass shower unit, bad stick-on fake marble vinyl tile floor, and an ok but not well-made sink cabinet. We painted the walls a very cheerful aqua blue, and that helped...then I started to collecting these little ceramic mermaids and fish from the 1950s...and that helped some more.

On a side tangent, I think the vintage mermaid wall hangings fascination probably started when my friends from the Dagons showed me the artwork for their album Teeth for Pearls. On another tangent, this is one of my favorite albums! Here's the album cover:

So back to the bathroom...we were finally able to hire a super nice guy to redo all the tiling and stuff. We found a cool vintage sink with chrome legs at Urban Ore in Berkeley, an amazing salvage place. I'd already installed an art deco medicine cabinet I'd gotten from there a few years ago, so that looked great with the new sink.

Then we had white subway tile put in for a new shower and tiny white hexagon tiles intalled for the floor. A million years ago, I had visited the Gamble House in Pasadena, sort of a mega-luxury bungalow built in 1908 by Greene and Greene. It had a fantastic all white bathroom with these same tile combinations, and have basically always wanted a bathroom like that ever since.

Sorry those pics aren't too inspiring, but you get the idea.

I made curtains from a fantastic Heather Ross mermaid print, which also features octopi and kelp, just like the giant seaweed we have here off the coast of San Francisco. My friends gave me a super cool crocheted squid in an apothecary jar for my birthday last year, which they got at the Curiosity Shoppe on Valencia St. The squid is made by artist Jessica Polka.

I found some great vintage looking glass and chrome towel bars and shelving, and added more water-themed things from my collection.

Stargazing

I decided to finally try my hand at curating-- in the form of an Etsy treasury. It was nighttime, for once there were stars out as opposed to the usual San Francisco summer fog, and so I titled my treasury "Stargazing" (which sounded more poetic than just "stars" which is what I originally had).

Painted Wood Cuteness! Part Two

So, as promised, let's talk about Irmi. First off, lots and lots of people love Irmi. Check out this Flickr group called "In Love With Irmi". My favorite is the super rad gnome lamp (oh, how I wish it were mine):

Who was Irmi? Irmi (also called Nursery Plastics) was a company formed in 1948 in New York by a couple, Fred and Irmi Bering. Fred and Irmi met and married in the United States after each had independently escaped Nazi Germany. They started with nothing and gradually built their company into a thriving business. As a child, Fred's father had given him a note stating, "If you should ever find yourself in a position where you have more than you need for yourself, think of those who are less fortunate." Honoring this in later years, Fred donated $2 million to the Danbury Hospital in Connecticut in memory of his beloved wife.

Isn't that a cool backstory?

Irmi produced really cute and well-made nursery and children's decor, primarily lamps, switchplate covers, music boxes and wall hangings. Mother Goose and fairytale stories were the most common themes and virtually all the products were hand painted in wood.

Obviously, our house had to have some Irmi magic. It probably looks like only a 5 year-old lives here.

Painted Wood Cuteness! Part One

When I was a kid, we used to go to my grandmother's house fairly often, as she lived across the bay in Oakland. Gram had an amazing 1920s era apartment that overlooked Lake Merritt. She had a penchant for holiday decorating and always created these great displays in different rooms.

My favorite displays, however, were the dining room centerpieces. She had a large collection of Erzgebirge figures which she arranged for holiday decor. (Erzgebirge is a region in Germany that has been producing beautifully painted wood figures for centuries.) One Easter centerpiece that I remember well consisted of a manzanita branch and lots of little painted wooden bunnies, some up in the branches and some on the tabletop. It was like a little Easter rabbit workshop scene. They were kind of like the bunnies in this photo I found on UncommonEye's flickr photostream:

The only figures I have from my Gram are these two: a rather cross and prim looking lady with an umbrella and a large boy in lederhosen with a tiny balloon.

There's an incredible store in Berkeley called Castle in the Air, and if you're ever in the area, you definitely need to check it out. They carry lots of these Erzgebirge figures, Swiss and German cuckoo clocks (don't even get me started on how much I love cuckoo clocks), beautiful toys, and fine art, stationery and craft supplies from Europe. It's one of my most favorite stores, and I'm not allowed to go there very often.

But in case you're thinking you might want some of these Erzgebirge treasures for yourself, and you can't get to Castle in the Air, here's a few from online.

I've always had a thing for charm necklaces and bracelets, and I love collecting the charms themselves. When I say collecting, I really mean hoard. Most of the time, it takes me forever to get around to putting them on a necklace, etc. so I just display them in trays and dishes on my dresser.

Why do I love the imagery of the circus but not the actual circus?

When I went to see Ringling Bros. as a kid, I remember it made me really sad to see all the animals having to live and work as traveling performers. I suppose I felt bad for the people, too, but as with movies (dying animals on film are always worse for me than dying people, let's not analyze that too much), the animals got to me more.

And don't even get me started on clowns. Like many other children whose parents weren't paying attention as they watched HBO in the other room, clowns were ruined for me by "Poltergeist." I used to build a wall of stuffed animals on each side of my twin bed to protect me from the evil clown beneath.

But strangely I have become über enamored with the visuals of the circus. Even clowns.

Hawaiian Vacation

Eating Shave Ice at Jo Jo's Anuenue

We had an AMAZING time on our vacation to Kauai. I didn't even look at anything that reminded me of work. Well, OK, I went to some amazing fabric stores (Vicky's in Kapaa and the Kapaia Stitchery near Lihue) and bought some super cute fabrics.

We did a lot of hiking, pretty strenuous and muddy, but breathtakingly gorgeous.

A bit of rain in the Waimea Canyon, but we're looking pretty fashionable.

I got an infection in my foot from some tropical bacteria buddies, but it was all taken care of by the super nice and fast ER staff in Kapaa. Maholo nui loa, Mahelona Medical Center!

We ate lots of delicious food!! You saw us slurping down the shave ice up above, but we also had loco moco (hamburger, fried egg and gravy over rice) and dinner-plate-sized macadamia nut pancakes at the Kountry Kitchen, melt-in-your-mouth opah fish at the Dolphin, lilikoi chiffon pie at Hamura Saimin, banana pineapple frosties at Banana Joe's, kalua pig with taro macaroni salad and mango taro smoothies at the Hanalei Taro Food Truck, Kauai grass fed beef burgers at Bubba Burger, and a solid mai tai at the Tahiti Nui!

OK, OK, so it's seeming like our vacation revolved around food, and that's not entirely untrue...
But really we got lots of exercise everyday, which is why we had to eat so much, really, seriously. You saw the hiking pictures...I don't have an underwater camera so I can't prove the swimming and snorkeling...

Anyway, thanks again, Kauai, for some much needed relaxation and good times!

P.S. I will not miss covering myself in SPF 100 sunblock everyday. I will also not miss being eaten by mosquitoes despite wearing bug repellent.

Cute Toys = Cute Necklaces

Sometimes I love little cute toys so much that I have to be around them all the time. My solution is to make them into necklaces.

The first toy necklace took me forever because I wanted lots of colors, and it was actually hard to find enough toys that were just the right small size. This collection was started just before cell phone charms got popular, then cell phone charms saved me.

Cheburashka, in the center, is one of my all time favorite charm toys. Don't know who Cheburashka is? Check him out, it will change your life.

When I was little, I got a super cute little green unicorn charm taped to a Hello Kitty store bag. I had bought a little coin purse with the weird cute unicorn on it, and it said "My Unico". I still have that purse, too. I googled the name Unico which was on my purse and found out he's a Japanese cartoon character, I think made by the same studio as Astroboy. So I recently found a tiny painted Unico cell phone charm, and this had to be done. I say "found" but really it was an all out search :)

GOING ON AN AMAZING VACATION!!

We will be traveling all over the place in Great Britain.
Some highlights: Gnome Reserve in Devon, Stonehenge, the oldest treehouse in the world near Wales, riding the steam train used as the Hogwarts Express (in Scotland), seeing the Loch Ness monster (ok, trying to), getting a girlie mini kilt made in my family tartan in Edinburgh, and lots of time in London!

Yet another midcentury hedgehog!?

Just when I didn't think it was possible, the universe has produced yet another midcentury modern hedgehog. I really thought hedgehogs were more in the realm of cute folksy woodland sweetness and not so much sleek modern cool redux. But this is the proof that the hedgehog is revered and inspirational to all design:

Making Cherry Blossoms

Just finished making tons of cherry blossoms for some new lariat necklaces and hair clips. This weekend is the awesome Cherry Blossom Festival in San Francisco's Japantown, and I can't wait to experience it. There's going to be a Bazaar Bizarre Artist Village craft fair inside the super cool store/gallery/movie theater New People. I'll be there on Sunday, come say "hi"!

A Beautiful Hike in Pacifica

Just before it started raining again, we went on a beautiful hike in Pacifica. For anyone that lives in the SF Bay Area, I highly recommend it. It's the Hazelnut Trail accessible in the San Pedro Valley County Park.

We passed by gorgeous oak trees, manzanita, tons and tons of wildflowers, plus birds, critters, and banana slugs. The air smelled wonderful, too. Oh yeah, and there were mushrooms that looked like toasted marshmallows.

Bavarian Gnome Cup & Saucer Plate Set

So, yes, I was wasting time doing gnome searches on ebay when I came across this! The sweetest plate set of all time.

I know that maybe I'm just a small niche market, but seriously, why can't there be more dinnerware like these? I mean, how many floral patterns does the world need? And plain white is certainly nice, but compared to gnomes...riding snails...taking walks with frogs...?

They're from Germany, of course, and have the cutest scenes on them, all different, and are from the 1930's. Get it here ...before I change my mind and buy them myself!

Had a very nice Easter today at the Cliff House in San Francisco. It was storming, but we had a seat by the window and saw a pretty dramatic rugged ocean- lots of waves crashing on Seal Rocks.

Course we all forgot our cameras.

I did make an Easter Bunny Brooch to wear from a weird little vintage bunny head that I got at a cool mom & pop craft shop in Sedalia, MO.

Midcentury Hedgehog

Like tons of other people these days, I've been really interested in midcentury design. I love the clean simple lines and general aesthetic, and wow, what gorgeous furniture came out of this period!

So, today I did a search on Etsy for "midcentury" (unlike many of my other searches where I frequently type in "hedgehog"), and lo and behold, a midcentury hedgehog appears. And just like the midcentury design tenets of form + function dictate, this little hedgie is also a toothpick holder!

Capsule Design Festival, San Francisco

Hey, Everybody,

Well, it's been a super, mega, busy last month or so for me. I crammed a lot of stuff into a short period of time. But more about that later...

This Sunday I'll be participating in Capsule Design Festival in the Hayes Valley neighborhood in San Francisco. I will be sharing space with the fabulous fashion designer, Mignonette. We are booth 88. If any of you all are around town, please come check it out!

Here's the official word on the street:

Twice a year Capsule hosts over 150 designers for an all day,
outdoor, Sunday extravaganza in sunny, fantastic Hayes Valley.

This first show of 2008 will have 160 independent clothing,
accessory, jewelry, and lifestyle designers. As well as some select
artist, print makers, and producers of some random well conceived
curiosities.

As always the show is free and open to the public. (it is outside) So
come and check it out.

You'll hear a group of DJs, courtesy of Nature Boy, and the Pacific Art Collective returns to adorn an art wall.

Build My Own House?

Lately I've been obsessed with the idea of building my own house, mostly because I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and housing is way too expensive. Not that building your own house is necessarily more affordable, but...
In a very roundabout way, I came across this company called Shelter-Kit that offers all kinds of kits for building your own home. Some are kinda modernist cool, others are more old-timey cosy, and all seemed to be pretty customizable.
Basically, you design what you want based on different modular units and materials offered, the company makes everything needed (including a super comprehensive instruction booklet), everything is shipped to your site, and you build the house on a foundation you have prepared beforehand. You have to do the interior finishing, plumbing, and electrical, etc. yourself, though.
Anyway, I'm just into the idea of having a lot of control over what's going into my house (as in "no toxic weird stuff") and being able to partially design it myself. Like I could add alpine chalet details, windowboxes, porch, whatever to make it look cool.
So, can I find affordable buildable land lots in the Bay Area? That would be the ultimate challenge to making this little idea a reality.

My Pippi Figures Arrived!

I won the cool Pippi figures off of the Swedish ebay-type site Tradera! The seller was really, really nice and made my purchase very easy for me as he spoke, er wrote, fantastic English.

Here's a picture of my Barbapapa figure welcoming my Pippi figure, hee hee.

Someday I hope to visit Sweden and see all the cool Pippi places, etc. in person. There's Astrid Lindgren's World Playpark in Vimmerby. Apparently there's a recreation of Pippi's house as well as a whole bunch of other people and places in Lindgren's many books.

One of my favorite artists, Carl Larson (and his wife, Karin, too) is from Sweden and you can tour the house that he and his family lived in and built. So I definitely want to go there and also to the places where his murals and paintings are exhibited. I was really lucky to see some of his original paintings at a museum show about the Arts and Crafts Movement at the L.A. County Museum of Art.

And, of course, you can't forget Ikea. Gotta see where Ikea all started.

Barbapapa Hedgehog

Does anyone remember a cartoon called Barbapapa? It was on probably in rerun in the late 70's, maybe early 80's, and I think it was originally European. I found this video on YouTube of a Barbapapa artist turning into a hedgehog. I know, I know, WHAT am I talking about? You'll just have to watch and see:

Pippi Longstocking things

It goes without saying (although I have said it many times) that Pippi has been a longtime hero of mine. Generally, I go through obsessive periods where I focus on one topic for a while and just voraciously search for things, read things, buy things, etc. that have to do with that topic. I remember one Christmas, I only asked for pirate Legoes. So, you guessed it, right now it's Pippi again.
The one bummer though is that it's really hard to find places to get Pippi items in the States, or at least places online that are in English. So far the coolest Pippi stuff has been on this Swedish ebay site, called Tradera. In order to figure it out, I've been translating everything word by word with an online Swedish to English dictionary. Kind of a long process, but that is the extent of my obsession. So I figured out finally how to register for the site and search for things, etc. but I can't seem to ask the sellers any questions- super crucial since I need to know if they can ship to the U.S. and how much it would cost.
So what am I wanting so much to go through all this trouble?
Well, those are some of the highlights.
I still haven't bought the hedgehog mobile or the foresty deer plates because I'm stuck on these Pippi things. "Geez, Katy, you're such a consumer!" That's what you're thinkin', right? Well, probably the answer is "yes". But I'm not that bad. This company has amazing mobiles. I wish I had more rooms and more space so I could hang a bunch of them, but I might have to find a home for this one.

I just had to share this. I was looking online to replace a bowl that had broken from my dinnerware set (I know, how domestic of me) when I came across these plates. I'm thinking I might have to get them!
